February is full of FUN in Kindergarten! We enjoyed celebrating the 100th day of school, Valentine's Day, and more. Here is a look at what we have been working on and a look to what is coming.
Reader's Workshop: Students are learning about fiction and non-fiction books in this unit. We have enjoyed sorting books, looking at different text features (like the table of contents, labels, and diagrams), and using non-fiction books to learn new information.
Writer's Workshop: We have continued our unit on Authors as Mentors. We have learned about Ezra Jack Keats, Mo Willems, Jonathan London, and Dr. Seuss. Each of those authors has a different "craft move" or writing technique they incorporate into their books. We've learned how to use speech bubbles, tell a story about something that has happened to us and more. Our unit will end on March 2 with a day to celebrate Dr. Suess!
Handwriting/Sight Words/Phonics: We are reviewing proper letter formation with CAPITAL letters in handwriting. We continue to work on short vowel word families. In February, we will work on short e word families and short u word families. We continue to practice our Kindergarten sight words.
Math: At this point in the year, we have learned how to show, write, and represent numbers 0-20. We have begun learning about coins. Kindergarten students are expected to know attributes of the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter as well as the coin's value. However, they are not expected to count with money.
Science/Social Studies: In Science, we are learning about natural resources. We've learned that natural resources can not be replinished by man and some of the different ways we can conserve these. In Social Studies, we are learning about being a good citizen and about presidents Washington and Lincoln.
