December FLEW by and we had an amazing time learning about holidays around the world, different traditions celebrated by our families, and topped it all off with a "trip" on the Polar Express! Thank you for your help in making our class parties FUN!
We are so glad to welcome your children back to school this week. Here is what we will be learning about in January:
Readers Workshop: We will begin with decoding strategies. Often, we tell children to "sound it out", however there are many other reading tools they can use to figure out words. Some include: using the picture clues, looking for patterns in words (chunks that are familiar), skipping over a tricky word and re-reading to see if it makes sense (using context clues), getting lips ready to read the words, trying a different vowel sound. We will begin sending home take home readers again in the next week or so as well.
Writer's Workshop: We are wrapping up our unit on how to make sure our writing is readable. Students learned about punctuation, spacing between words, capitalization, using word wall words, and sounding out words. Next, we will move into a unit using different authors as mentors and incorporating some of the different writing techniques authors use in writing stories. Some examples include using "sound words", repeated phrases, speech bubbles, and rhyme.
Handwriting/Phonics: We completed all of the letters and numbers in our handwriting booklets. We will now continue practicing to write words, sentences, and more. Always remind students to use proper grip when writing and to form their letters TOP TO BOTTOM. We continue to work on short a word families such as -at (cat, bat, sat), -an (man, can, fan), -ad (sad, mad, dad), -ag (tag, rag, bag).
Sight Words: The following sight words will be introduced in January--we, look, an, she, went, up, no, have. You can see all of the Kindergarten sight words on the back of your student's calendar in their daily take home folder.
Math: We completed our unit on 2D and 3D shapes just before the break. We are now working on adding one more and teen numbers.
Science/Social Studies: We will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his contributions to our world. We will also learn about maps and their uses. In Science, we will begin learning about day and night cycles as well as objects in the sky.
Looking Ahead: The 100th day of school is in early February. Kindergarten students will have a home project to make a shirt with 100 items and wear on the 100th day of school. More information will come home very soon. Valentine's Day parties will be held February 14. We WILL exchange valentine cards. More information will come home later in the month.
And, finally--many of your children are learning to tie their shoes! That is WONDERFUL. Here is a very helpful trick to help your child learn to tie their shoes! Putting the end of the lace through the hole to help "hold the ears" in place REALLY helps!
