Our year is off to a great start! Our students have been busy making new friends, learning rules and procedures, and having FUN while learning. Here is a little about what we've been up to and what we have coming up next, too!
Reading: We are learning how to "treasure" books. We've discussed taking care of books, holding books correctly, and how good readers look at the pictures and words. We're also working to build up sustained reading time. The more we practice, the better our reading habits will become.
Writing: Many times, our children express frustration in the beginning of the year because they "can't write". Well, we've taught our students that we are ALL writers! Drawing is writing. "Scribbling" is writing. Writing the first letter of a word is writing. Even writing random letters is writing! During our writing workshop time, students are given time to practice their writing craft.
Math: We have begun "number talks" where we discuss numbers and how to represent different numbers. We've also learned how we use our math manipulatives and tools in the classroom. We will start our mystery jar soon--more information will go home with your child when it is their turn to bring in the mystery jar!
Handwriting and Phonics: This week, we focused on the letters Bb and Mm. Next week, we will work on the letters Aa and Rr. Ask your child--where do you start your letters? (The answer is "at the top!") Proper letter formation is important to our young writers. Students should begin writing from the top and pull DOWN to form letters. They should never write from bottom to top.
Science and Social Studies: Our first few weeks will be spent learning about what science is and what scientists do. We will also learn how to stay safe in science and try out a few experiments to practice being a scientist. In social studies, we are learning about why we have rules and what we do at school. In the coming weeks, the focus will be "All about Me", so that we can learn more about each student.
Coming up: Our first homework project is going home TODAY (September 8). It is due back September 25. Also, our color days begin next week, September 11. Each day, we encourage the children to wear the color and we will have various activities to support it. The days are as follows:
9/19 Pink or Maroon
