Our Cardinal Kindergartners are already rocking and rolling this school year! Here is what we have been up to the last few weeks.
Reading: In Reading, we have been working on reading books independently. We've talked about how good readers read their books from the beginning to the end. We're also learning how good readers LOVE to read and spend time reading and they read the world around them, too (like bathroom signs, store names, etc.). We are working to build up our reading stamina in our classrooms (reading/looking at books for longer amounts of time).
Writing: Our writers are learning how and where writers come up with ideas for writing. We have learned about labeling and finding labels in our classroom to help us become better writers. We are also generating classroom lists of writing ideas to help get us started with new writing pieces.
Handwriting/Letter study/Phonics: We have learned how to write the letters Bb, Mm, Aa, Rr, Ss, and Ee. We build the letters with our handwriting wood pieces and practice writing the letters in our handwriting workbooks. We also brainstorm words that begin with the letter sounds and we practice singing our alphabet song. You can see Mrs. Clark's class in action below!
Sight Words: We just wrapped up our colors and color word unit. We also have added "see" and "I" to our word wall. Next week, we will add "the" and "me".
Math: We are working on number talks and ways to represent numbers. So far, we have learned numbers 0-5. Ask your child: how can I make 4? Can you make it with 2 hands? Is there another way you can make it? These discussions will help build your child's number fluency and will greatly help your child understand addition and subtraction facts.
Science/Social Studies: We learned about the places around our school and went on a search to find the gingerbread man who got loose! We are learning about our 5 senses and how scientists use their senses to make observations, comparisons, and conclusions to solve problems. Next week, we will learn more about our classmates as we begin our ME posters!
We hope you enjoy reading about what we are doing everyday. A couple of reminders: Our library day is MONDAY. Please help your child remember to return their book. Also, water bottles should be brought to school every Monday and they should be EMPTY. They will be sent home on Fridays. Thank you so much!
