We had a jam packed March at Spring Creek Elementary and our April is proving to be just as full. It's always rewarding this time of year to see how much the children have learned and how they have grown!
Reading: After our non-fiction reading unit, we moved on to reading poems and songs. Students learned about reading "fluently" and how poems and songs had a beat. We also enjoyed reading with partners and exploring our favorite poems. Nursery rhymes and familiar songs were great for these lessons, so if you hear your child singing or reciting nursery rhymes from your childhood, this is where it's coming from! We are moving on to re-telling stories and acting them out.
Writing: We recently wrapped up our non-fiction writing unit. Students learned about how making lists, using lists to write facts about a topic, how to writing, writing letters, and writing invitations. We enjoyed using the steps from our "How to Make a Pizza" book to actually make a personal pizza in our class! We also wrote invitations to our families for our upcoming Publishing Night (Tuesday, April 24 from 6-7:30). We hope to see you there!
Math: Students are learning about addition and subtraction. They are using different strategies to help them solve problems. Examples of the strategies include objects to manipulate, using fingers, drawings, or number lines.
Science: In March, we introduced our Living and Non-Living unit. We've learned about what makes things living and what things are not living and why. Students understand that living things have basic needs like food, water, and air. We moved into plants where we enjoyed growing our own bean and observing it like a scientist. This week, we are learning about taking care of our Earth before we move into our final unit on animals.
Phonics/Handwriting: We learned the correct letter formation for both capital and lowercase letters and are now reviewing the letter formation again. Remember to encourage students to write letters top to bottom and to use a "raindrop" pencil grip. We have also learned about all of the letter sounds as well as basic digraph sounds (sh, ch, th, and wh). We continue to work on spelling and writing CVC words (consonant vowel consonant words--like pig, sun, dog, etc.).
A list of the Kindergarten sight words can be found in your child's daily folder. Please review and practice these with your child at home!
