Here is what our Spring Creek Cardinal Kindergartners have been working on this month:
Reading: Students continue to increase their reading stamina during independent reading time. Students are learning how good readers think about what they are reading, ask questions about what they are reading, and make connections to what they are reading. For example, a student might notice the sight word "can" in a book. "Hey! Mrs. Anderson! I made a connection! I know this word "can" is on our word wall, so I can read it in my book, too!" or "Mrs. Tipton! My book is all about a little girl who likes to do different things with her dog. It reminds me of the fun things I like to do with my dog, too!" These are both connections.
Writing: A few weeks ago, we finished our unit on pattern books. These books are a great first book for our students to write because the pages repeat and they use a lot of sight words. Students were able to share these stories with writing buddies from different grade levels and it was fun to see their excitement. We have moved on to writing and dictating stories that have a beginning/middle/end. These take a little more time to develop, but will be neat to see when they have put all of the pieces together. It is very common in Kindergarten to have a WIDE variety of writers. Some students are writing letters and letter strings while some are able to write full ideas. This is ok and what we expect to see in Kindergarten.
Math: We have learned numbers 0-10 (show the number, write the number, represent the number in different ways), 2D shapes, and we are currently working on different forms of measurement. Students have enjoyed using pan balances (scales) to compare the weight of different objects and using items found in our classroom to measure their names!
Handwriting/Phonics: We continue to work on letters and sounds plus letter formation through Handwriting Without Tears. So far, we have learned the following letters and their correct letter formation: Bb, Mm, Aa, Rr, Ss, Ee, Tt, Gg, Nn, Pp, Ii, Cc, Hh, Ff, Dd, Ll, Kk, Oo, Jj, Ww, Qq, and Yy
Sight words: I, am, to, can, on, said, my, with, go, at, what, like (plus color words)
Science: Seasons and weather as well as changes we see in the sky have provided lots of fun and hands on learning for us! We also experimented with heat and learned how heat energy could change things. We also learned that if we take heat away, it cools objects and that can create a change as well!
Social Studies: We are learning about the season and about the first Thanksgiving. We have talked about what it means to be thankful and why we celebrate Thanksgiving. We also have learned what the past and what the present means. It was a very colorful conversation in our classrooms when the students learned that the teachers didn't have smartphones or iPads/tablets growing up! Past and present is perfect to study around Thanksgiving. Before we leave for the Thanksgiving break, we will have a "Friendship Feast" that represents the Thanksgiving of the PAST.
Hello! We are the Kindergarten Team at Spring Creek Elementary. The purpose of this website and blog is to effectively communicate what is going on in our Kindergarten classrooms. Thanks for stopping by!
