Fall is here and we're enjoying the cooler weather at recess. Hopefully, it will continue to stay nice for awhile. Just a reminder on those cooler mornings--please label all jackets with your child's name! In a few weeks our lost and found will be full and if it is labeled we can easily get that item back to your child.
Here is what we've been learning and a little look ahead:
Readers Workshop: We're learning how to shop for books in our classroom and how good readers stay engaged with their books for extended durations of time. We've also learned to go on a picture walk to see what the book might be about. Pictures really help our young readers figure out "tricky" words. Helping them to look at the words is a good reading strategy.
Writers Workshop: We've learned how to listen for sounds in words to write them. We're also working on writing pattern books--books that repeat to help convey meaning. Students have enjoyed using sight words to create books. We will continue this unit through the month of October.
Handwriting/Phonics: This year, we have learned the following letters and their corresponding sounds-Bb, Mm, Aa, Rr, Ss, Ee, Tt, Gg, Nn, Pp, Ii, Cc, Hh, and Ff. Please encourage your child to use proper letter formation to help break any poor habits that have already been established, particularly for the letters we have already introduced!
Sight words: color words, to, can, I, am, you, it, the, me, see
Additionally, you can see ALL of the Kindergarten sight words on the back of the calendar in the daily folder.
Math: We recently wrapped up our 2-dimensional shape unit. Students are expected to identify circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles and their attributes (number of sides, number of vertices, etc.) We also have learned how to write, read, and represent numbers 0-5.
Social Studies: Our community helper unit was a big hit! We had special visitors that came to share about their jobs in the community. The children also enjoyed our community helper dress up day. Currently, we are learning about maps and our neighborhoods. Something that both the fire department AND the police department encourgaed was for EVERY student to learn their address and their first and last name. We encourage you to practice this with your child as well.
Science: We have completed our unit on the senses and have moved on to sound and light energy. Students are learning about sources of light and how that light is used. This week, we are making "light energy wands" to see how light can be reflected from the sun.
